The Gift of God

As I age and grow deeper in my relationship with the Lord, Christmas has become more of a time for me to reflect on my blessings and really dwell on what this season is really all about. The birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

The presents I struggle finding because I want to choose the perfect thing for each person on my list, bring to mind the gifts the wise men brought to our Lord (Matthew 2:11). The beautiful lights that adorn houses, buildings, and trees, make me think of the shining star that announced His birth (Matthew 2:10), as well as the fact that He is the Light of the World (John 8:12). The gathering together with family and friends that I so anticipate and look forward to reminds me of the fellowship of Jesus and His disciples and the fellowship I now have with Jesus and my brothers and sisters in Christ. What we all call the “Christmas spirit” that seems to flood the world during this time is really love. Love comes from God because He is love (1 John 4:7-8), and so I think of Him.

It’s easy to get lost in our to-do lists during this season and find the busyness and hustle-and-bustle stressful and overwhelming. I encourage you to not allow all these pressures and influences to make you forget the real reason for the season and take some intentional time to stop and reflect on it. We celebrate the birth of our Savior, who came here to reconcile us to the Father by presenting Himself as the perfect offering to the Lord (Hebrews 9:13-28). What a gift! No greater gift has ever been given nor ever will be. The gift of salvation is freely given to us (Romans 6:23). All you have to do is accept it.

We know, when Jesus finished His work on the cross and was laid in the tomb, that He rose again. He spent over a month with His disciples after His resurrection and then ascended into Heaven. He is there now, so Christmas time is a birthday for Him. While we don’t know the exact date of His birth, we celebrate on December 25th.

The whole world celebrates Christmas. It literally means, “Christ’s mass”. It’s a Christian celebration of the birth of Christ. Some call it other things, and for many, Jesus never crosses their minds. I think of these people. The ones who do not know the Truth. Maybe you are one of these people. I want you to know the Truth. I want you to know the Good News. Jesus loves you. You, in all your doubt, all your messiness, all your sin, all your searching for something to fill that hole in your heart. He loves you. He wants you to believe in Him. Believe, and He will fill you up and make you whole. Believe, because He is Truth. Believe, accept His gift of salvation. Just believe.

The Bible tells us that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead that we will be saved (Romans 10:9). There are no stipulations. You don’t have to do this-or-that first, or memorize certain scriptures, or go to a specific place, or eat an apple, or be a doctor, or anything else. Just believe. Your belief will prompt your confession, and you will be born again a new creature in Christ. Your life will never be the same. After you are saved, let Jesus do His work in your heart. Pray and read your Bible. Get to know Him more. Fellowship with other believers. Be a part of a church body that preaches Truth, loves God and each other.

Oh, how I pray that you have accepted the gift of God this Christmas season!

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, (Ephesians 2:8).
